God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen/We Three Kings by The Barenaked Ladies and Sarah McLachlan

Blog: 24 Songs of Christmas, Dec. 17: 'God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen/We Three Kings' -- Barenaked Ladies and Sarah McLachlan (12/17/13) | Greencastle Banner Graphic
In middle school and high school the Barenaked Ladies was my jam! I procured every album they produced, by legal means or otherwise; the albums released in my college years were... not procured.
This kooky, adorable, hard to designate band is peak-Canadianess, and then they released their holiday album Barenaked For the Holidays in 2004 and collaborated with other Canadian superpowers Michael Bublé and Sarah McLachlan, thus establishing the all-powerful Canadian Triumverate of Musical Talent.
We're going to ignore Bublé's entirely mediocre Elf's Lament and pass on to the mash-up of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen/We Three Kings.

That didn't actually happen, (to my knowledge)
This was originally recorded in 1996, and I cannot think of song that more perfectly encapsulates the weird bohemian, alternative, pseudo-hippy revival zeitgeist that white people in the late 90's/early 200's were going through. The melody is slightly darker and sinister for both snippets of songs, making me think of some carnival gypsy boy distracting the Gentlemen by singing and playing his guitar for them, while his manic pixie girl partner picks their pockets because we all know said stuffed-shirts aren't paying nearly their weight in taxes.
